Can You Start a House Extension in Autumn or Winter?

Many homeowners assume that extension work has to begin in spring or summer, but that is not necessarily the case. With the right planning and an experienced team managing the work, a house extension can be started successfully during autumn or winter.

In fact, beginning during the colder months can work particularly well if you would like the extension completed in time to enjoy during spring or summer. Rather than waiting for warmer weather before taking the first step, you can use autumn and winter to move the project forward.

Naturally, the weather needs to be taken into account. Heavy rain, frost and shorter daylight hours can occasionally affect groundworks, concrete, masonry and roofing. This does not mean the project has to stop; it simply means the programme needs to be realistic and each stage must be completed in suitable conditions.

Good preparation makes a significant difference. Safe access, effective site drainage and the correct storage of materials all help keep the project moving. Temporary coverings can also be used to protect exposed areas while structural and roofing work is completed. Once the extension is secure and watertight, internal work such as plumbing, electrics, plastering, carpentry and decorating can continue with much less dependence on the weather.

There may also be advantages to beginning outside the traditionally busy spring and summer period. Starting sooner gives you time to work through the design, planning permission, structural calculations, Building Regulations and material choices without delaying the project for another year.

Before construction starts, it is important to make sure the necessary plans and approvals are in place. Depending on the size and location of the extension, you may need planning permission, or the work may fall under permitted development rights. Building Regulations approval will normally still be required to ensure areas such as the foundations, structure, insulation, drainage, ventilation and fire safety meet the correct standards.

This is why the planning stage is just as important as the building work itself. A clear programme allows the different trades, inspections, deliveries and materials to be organised in the right order. It also helps identify potential challenges early, before they lead to unnecessary delays or additional costs.

At South Devon Construction, we manage extension projects from the initial planning stages through to final completion. As your Principal Contractor, we coordinate architects, structural engineers, Building Control, specialist contractors, trades, suppliers, materials and schedules. This gives you one reliable point of contact instead of having to manage every part of the build yourself.

Every extension and property is different, so there is no single perfect month to begin. The best starting point will depend on the condition of the site, the type of construction, the approvals required and how far you have progressed with your plans. What matters most is having a realistic programme and a team that understands how to manage the changing conditions.

If you are considering extending your home in the South West, you do not necessarily need to wait until spring. Contact South Devon Construction to tell us about your plans and arrange a free consultation and estimate. We can look at what is involved, explain the next steps and help you choose the right time to begin.
